“Gratitude is not a reaction to a beautiful life; it is the lens that clears the dust, revealing the beauty that was always there.”
— Aroonji
We often walk through the world like a person carrying a heavy sack of stones, counting each one with a sigh. This worry, that setback, the unreturned email, the broken promise. We become meticulous accountants of our grievances, building a fortress out of our problems.
But what if we paused by the riverbank of the present moment and emptied the sack? What if, instead of counting the stones, we began to count the stars?
In the rush of modern life, our minds are naturally wired to look for threats—a psychological survival mechanism ancient ancestors needed to avoid predators. But today, this “negativity bias” simply leaves us rich in complaints and bankrupt in joy. The ancient traditions, from the sun-drenched ashrams of India to the marble porches of Athens, offered a radical antidote: the deliberate practice of focus.
The Two Wells: Where Are You Drinking From?
Imagine your mind contains two deep wells.
The first is the Well of Scarcity. It is fed by the streams of “not enough”—not enough time, not enough money, not enough recognition. When you drink from this well, your vision narrows. You see only the cracks in the pavement, the gray in the sky, and the flaws in those you love.
The second is the Well of Abundance. This well is fed by the quiet undercurrents of the present moment. It is the breath filling your lungs right now, without you even asking. It is the warmth of a morning cup of tea, the steady rhythm of your heart, and the unearned miracle of a new sunrise.
“He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.”
— Epictetus
When you choose to count your blessings rather than your problems, you are simply shifting your bucket from the first well to the second. The landscape around you hasn’t changed, but your thirst has been quenched.
The Alchemy of Chitta Prasada
In the Yoga Sutras, there is a beautiful concept known as Chitta Prasada—the clearing of the mind-stuff, rendering it as serene and transparent as a mountain lake. How do we achieve this when the winds of daily life are blowing so fiercely?
We do it through the alchemy of appreciation.
Marcus Aurelius, the Stoic Emperor, used to remind himself every morning: “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.”
This is not toxic positivity or ignoring the genuine hardships of life. It is an act of spiritual rebellion. It is looking at a stormy sky and choosing to anchor your awareness to the patch of blue peeking through the clouds. When we focus on the good, the good multiplies. Not because the world magically changes overnight, but because what we feed with our attention grows in our reality.
“Wear gratitude like a cloak and it will feed every corner of your life.”
— Rumi
Shifting the Gaze
Tonight, before your head hits the pillow, close the ledger of your worries. Let the problems of tomorrow sleep until tomorrow. Instead, open the ledger of your heart. Find three tiny things—a smile from a stranger, the texture of a warm blanket, the simple fact that you survived another day—and count them.
Let them be your stars in the dark.
Take a soft breath in, and let it go…
Why measure the shadows when you are surrounded by the light?
Reflect and Transform
As you step back into the rhythm of your day, I leave you with this question to carry in your heart:
If you were to lose everything tonight except for the things you actively gave thanks for today… what would you have left tomorrow?
